About Jamaica
Location: Kingston (1987 est. pop., 646,400), the capital and largest city in Jamaica, lies on the southeastern coast of the island. One of the leading ports of the West Indies, it exports sugar, rum, molasses, and bananas. Other industries include tourism, oil refining, shoe and clothing manufacturing, and food processing. The average annual temperature is 25 deg C (77 deg F), and yearly rainfall is 813 mm (32 in). The University of the West Indies (1962) is there.
Founded in 1692 after nearby Port Royal was destroyed by an earthquake, Kingston became the capital of Jamaica in 1872. Points of interest include Rockfort, a 17th-century fortress; the Church of Saint Thomas; and Headquarters House (18th century), once the seat of government.
Climate: The climate is year-round summer with no definite rainy season, although it usually rains most in May and October. North-easterly trade winds blow continually.
Capitals & Major Towns: Capital Kingston Major towns/cities Montego Bay, Spanish Town, St Andrew, Portmore, May
People & Culture: Though a small nation, Jamaica is rich in culture, and has a strong global presence. The musical genres reggae, ska, mento, rocksteady, dub, and, more recently, dancehall and ragga all originated in the island's vibrant popular urban recording industry. Christianity remains a strong influence on cultural life, particularly in music. Most people learn their music at church, and biblical references are often used in popular songs. It is not uncommon for musicians to be playing dancehall music on Saturday night, and church music on Sunday morning.
Economy: Jamaica is a mixed, free-market economy with state enterprises as well as private sector businesses. Major sectors of the Jamaican economy include agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism and financial and insurance services. Tourism and mining are the leading foreign exchange earners.
Language: While the official language of Jamaica is English, native islanders typically speak in a regional patois, which is a combination of Spanish, English, and assorted African tongues.
